2014: Healthy Living in Smart Cities
Urban communities face major sustainability challenges that affect public health and quality of life, including snarled traffic, greenhouse gas emissions, and pollution. The researchers will design a comprehensive information infrastructure: a network of fixed and mobile sensors to monitor environmental quality, along with communication and modeling tools to interact with the network and end users. For example, joggers could record street-level air quality with mobile devices to help others plot a healthier route through the city. This advanced system will inform locals and city planners in real time—making crowded cities a lot more livable.
